About Us

Makini Schools was founded in February 1978. It was then called the Riara Gardens Academy and began as a nursery school with just 8 children. This was in a colonial bungalow where once lived the founders, the late Dr. Pius Okelo and Dr. Mary Okelo.

The school then organically grew in phases and by 1980 another plot was bought across the Kirichwa River. In 1981, the name was changed to Makini Schools.

In 1996 the school was divided into 3 sections – Junior, Middle and Upper sections on adjoining plots. The same year, the Makini Academy was created for secondary school and enrolled 27 boys in Form 1. The following year, it admitted girls. Currently, the school has four campuses: the Ngong Road (mother) campus, the Makini Junior Academy on State House Avenue, the Migosi and the Kibos campus both in Kisumu.

Makini additionally has a number of offshoots which include the Makini CollegeMakini Training & Consultancy, Boresha Limited which deals in creating digital content and the AFBE which is the first Association of Family Business Enterprises in Kenya.

Makini is consistently rated among the top Kenyan-curricular schools in the country. At the time when schools were ranked, Makini had taken first place nationally many times in the KCPE examinations. The Academy has also recorded applaudable results in KCSE and held the position of best private mixed school in Nairobi. The Makini College and Consultancy have scooped awards in the annual CIM and CAM presentations.

Makini teachers are selected on the basis of high professional achievements, demonstrated enthusiasm, dedication and concern for the individual needs of each child. All staff are involved in continuous self-development and leadership training programmes.
