Makini Pre-School Teachers Attend KHA Workshop on Effective Teaching

Makini Pre-School teachers participated in a workshop organized by the Kindergarten Headmistresses’ Association on the 27th of February.

The training was based on developing a child-friendly learning space, positive discipline and classroom management, teaching with low-cost resources, pupil centered learning for English literacy, time management, practical ways to make the classroom creative and fun and Evaluation and Assessment. Among the teaching techniques analyzed were those of Sesame Street and the Inclusion Development Program (IDP) which is focused on teaching children who have learning difficulties.

Some of the points highlighted were:

  • Making eye contact with each other while speaking in order to feel included;
  • Being respectful of all answers, right or wrong and encourage pupils to treat each other’s responses respectfully;
  • Work with pupils to create classroom rules which have meaning for them; 
  • Teach pupils skills to work through conflict rather than solving problems for them; 
  • Use recycled/ free and found object, use what nature provides and involve children in collecting learning materials;
  • Draw attention to literacy in the environment and why it is important; 
  • Use teaching strategies which extend vocabulary, language and critical thinking;   
  • Listening and speaking are just as important as reading and writing;
  • Help pupils know what to expect each day;
  • Practice patience and flexibility;
  • Encourage hands-on learning;
  • Set clear learning objectives each day;
  • Use varied assessment methods in the classroom.
