Gifted and Talented

The Makini Gifted and Talented department has seen many of our students access the opportunity to identify and nurture their exceptional abilities. The school has collaborated with organizations as Stadi Za Maisha on enrichment programmes for the gifted and talented. In one instance, we had two academically outstanding students, Finnic Otieno and Melissa Kedenge, attend the John Hopkins - Centre for Talented Youth summer 2014 programme. Other pupils have received secondary school scholarships at the prestigious Choate Rosemary Hall school in Connecticut.

Additionally, each year, one Makini primary school graduate receives  the Moody Awori Scholarship to Brookhouse Secondary School based on merit and leadership skills.

Makini also nurtures talent in various sporting activities via the Makini Sports Academy, which has produced some of the best players nationally in swimming and other sports. In 2016, Chanelle Wangari was 8th position in the U.S Kids Golf World Championship, making her the first girl of age 9 and under to attain this level from Kenya.

Meanwhile, planning is underway to launch a Gifted and Talented Centre that will use approved and standardised assessments to identify the exceptionally gifted and talented youth in multiple intelligences.

Children with behavioral disorders will have the opportunity to get assessed and access Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that would assist them in coping with their issues and identify their talents.

Identification is a very critical step in raising individuals who can develop expertise in their respective field of giftedness, and in turn contribute to society in groundbreaking ways. As the quote credited to Albert Einstein says, “If you Judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
