Our story

Our Story

We provide the Kenyan and Cambridge curricula drawing from global best practice with a child centered approach. We educate the whole child to be ready for life and work in the modern world while aiming to make Makini a world class school.

Our Promise

Academic Progress

A Makini Learner exceeds previous expectations of what they can achieve academically, whatever their starting point.

Work Readiness

A Makini Learner understands, develops and models the skills and attributes required for a rewarding and satisfying career.

Confidence

A Makini Learner is confident in their heritage, self worth, unique voice and ability to make a positive difference in the world.

History

Makini Schools was founded in February 1978. It was then called the Riara Gardens Academy and began as a nursery school with just 8 children. This was in a colonial bungalow where once lived the founders, the late Dr. Pius Okelo and Dr. Mary Okelo.

The school then organically grew in phases and by 1980 another plot was bought across the Kirichwa River. In 1981, the name was changed to Makini Schools.

In 1996 the high school was opened enrolling 27 boys in Form 1. The following year, it admitted girls. Currently, the school has four campuses: the Ngong Road (mother) campus and the Makini Junior Academy on State House Avenue in Nairobi; Makini Junior School Migosi and Makini School Kibos in Kisumu.

On its 40th anniversary in 2018, the school changed ownership from the Okelo’s and is now under the ADvTECH Group. Our aim is to become a world class Kenyan curriculum school in the region.

Mission

Makini will actively encourage and facilitate: The formation of each student’s moral character, unique skills, capabilities and talents; the creation of a strong communal ethos of social responsibility; and the achievement of the highest possible academic results.

Vision

Makini’s vision is to provide quality education at affordable cost and to create centres of excellence in which each child will develop: the highest possible moral, academic, cultural and sporting standards; a wide range of interests, capacities and talents; a strong sense of social responsibility and carry these values into adult life.

Our Aims

To offer the Kenyan and Cambridge curricula drawing on global best practice

To ensure each Makini child is equipped to have a happy and successful life

To become a world class school
